The commissioner general of Brazil at Expo 2020 Dubai, Sergio Segovia, has said that “Brazil wholeheartedly supports” Expo 2020 Dubai Steering Committee’s “decision to seek postponement” of the World Expo until 2021.

Segovia’s comments follow the decision by Expo 2020 Dubai's Steering Committee to explore with Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), the governing body of World Expo, a year-long postponement of the “world’s greatest event”, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak.

Expo 2020 Dubai officials have confirmed that a final decision on the postponement will be made by the BIE’s Executive Committee and the General Assembly.

According to Article 28 of the BIE Convention, a change of dates requires a two-thirds majority vote from Member States of the organisation, Construction Week earlier reported.

Commenting further on the idea of postponement, Segovia said: "Our path hasn’t changed course; it is just a bit longer.”

“The World Expo in Dubai will still be an amazing event that brings out the best of our humanity,” he added.

Located within Expo 2020 Dubai’s Sustainability District, Brazil Pavilion will feature a walkable “water blade”.

The 4,000m² pavilion is designed to resemble a stilt home that is commonly found along the banks of the Amazon River. At night, the illuminated structure will resemble a floating cube; it will sit on a shallow water blade.

The pavilion itself comprises a central square, covered in a thin layer of water, and enclosed by a tensile structure enveloped in a lightweight white fabric.

Architects from three studios, JPG.ARQ, MMBB, and Ben-Avid, designed the pavilion that will be operated by the country's trade and export agency, Apex-Brasil.
