Dubai Municipality has completed Phase 4, and reached 90% progress of the Dubai Deep Storm water tunnel project.

Phase 4 of the project marked the implementation of the Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM) to the endpoint at the Main Terminal Pumping Station on the man-made island near the Port of Jebel Ali.

The tunnel is expected to pass under Expo Road and Sheikh Zayed Road, and will be operational in October 2020, originally planned in line with the Expo 2020 Dubai.

Dubai Municipality awarded the project to Six Construct, in a joint venture with PORR. The water tunnel project holds an estimated contract value of $353.9m (AED1.3bn).

The tunnel will treat both rainwater and groundwater, and will drain almost 40% of the entire urban area of Dubai.

The project consists of a 10km tunnel of 11.05m boring diameter, at 30-45m below ground. The purpose of the tunnel is to drain storm water from the Jebel Ali area to the sea.

The tunnel will have four deep shafts which are 14-20m in diameter and 40-45m deep, to connect the connection chambers with the tunnel. 4 connection chambers - one at each drop shaft - will collect water from the storm water network to the shafts.
