Saudi Water Partnership Company (SWPC) and the Shuqaiq Three Company for Water (S3CW) that are developing the Shuqaiq 3 independent water project (IWP) desalination plant in Shuqaiq in Jizan region have marked 50% completion on the construction of the project.

Simultaneously, the construction team on the site, led by the engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) contractor, ACCIONA, have collectively recorded two million Lost Time Injury (LTI) – free man-hours on the seawater reverse osmosis (SWRO) desalination plant.

According to ACCIONA, the safety milestone was achieved due to risk prevention and the correct implementation of the health and safety (HSE) measures for all the workers.

Despite the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic that created challenging situation for both preventive measures and productivity goals, the company was able to reach the final target as per the dates on the contract.

ACCIONA, is working with Japan’s Marubeni Corporation, Almar, and Rawafid Alhadarah Holding Co on the project, which achieved the financial close on the project in May 2019, with the total value exceeding a $600m (SAR2.3bn).

The project also includes the EPC of a large electrical special facility (ESF) to feed the plant with power, and some other additional installations from the existing power plants in the vicinity.

Upon completion in Q4 2021, the Shuqaiq 3 IWP desalination plant will produce 450,000 cubic meters of potable water per day.

The facility will fulfill the water needs of Abha and Jizan that has a potential population of two million people.

Speaking on the milestones, Jesús García Prieto, ACCIONA’s project director for Shuqaiq 3 IWP, said: “This important milestone reflects our high commitment designing and building this kind of vital facilities for the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and fulfilling the best health and safety standards that guarantee safe conditions for our employees and subcontractors.”

Meanwhile, Altaf Khan Mohsan-CMIOSH, ACCIONA’s project HSE manager at Shuqaiq 3 IWP, said:  “This impressive achievement becomes a reality because of ACCIONA’s ongoing commitment toward the HSE goal (Zero Harm) through its stringent HSE strategies, system and safe processes.

“In addition, Shuqaiq-3 team prioritises the environmental values and maintains the Project´s sustainability at the highest level. The awareness given by the HSE team about the Covid-19 pandemic is remarkable and has minimized the consequences in the project.”
