Expo 2020 Dubai road projects make construction progress
RTA says Phases 1 and 5 of roadworks around World Expo's site are respectively 43% and 50% complete [video]
Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) confirmed progress on Phases 1 and 5 of roads providing access and connectivity to Expo 2020 Dubai’s site, where construction is currently under way in full swing.
A main bridge, part of Phase 5, has opened at the intersection of Expo Road and Al Asayel Street, with the fifth stage of the World Expo’s road network now more than 50% complete.
Three lanes in each direction of the Expo Road bridge have been partially opened, according to RTA’s director general and executive board’s chairman, HE Mattar Al Tayer. During his inspection of the major road project’s site, Al Tayer said that Expo Road would be elevated at its Al Asayel insurrection with a six-lane bridge spanning 800m.
Two other bridges are also to be built linking Expo Road with a 1km service road, allowing for smooth traffic flow to and from the site of Expo 2020 Dubai.
Also included in Phase 5 are the construction of a signalised surface junction at the Expo Road-Al Asayel Street intersection, which would allow easy entry and exit from the expo road to Jebel Ali Industrial Area and Jafza.
Meanwhile, Eng Maitha bin Adai, chief executive officer of RTA’s Traffic and Roads Agency, provided updates about Phase 1’s progress, which has posted a completion rate of 43%. Phase 1’s scope includes the conversion of a roundabout at the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road-Expo Road intersection into a flyover.
As part of the first stage, Expo Road will be elevated and widened through the construction of two bridges comprising six lanes in each direction. Additionally, 27km of roadworks will be carried out on Expo Road to widen it from four lanes to six in each direction, and service roads will be built both ways. Four bridges will be constructed to carry traffic between Expo Road and Expo 2020 Dubai’s site.
On 9 February, 2019, RTA opened a traffic diversion on the Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road-Expo Road intersection to ease the commute heading to Expo 2020 Dubai’s site. The diversion is expected to support the construction of Phase 1’s remaining bridges.
Dubai’s 2019 budget includes planned spending of $2.5bn (AED9.2bn) for infrastructure development and improvement ahead of Expo 2020. According to Dubai Media Office, Al Tayer said the Phase 1 and Phase 5 projects are progressing according to their set timelines, adding that all construction will complete well ahead of Expo 2020 Dubai’s opening, set for 20 October, 2020.
