Ops begin on Dubai's $354m Jebel Ali plant built by Besix, India's L&T
L&T senior official says the STP's Phase 2, which has a capacity of 375,000 m3, recorded 10 million safe man-hours
Dubai Municipality (DM) has started operations on Phase 2 of Jebel Ali Sewage Treatment Plant (STP), which was built by Indian construction and engineering heavyweight Larsen & Turbo (L&T) in a joint venture with Belgium-headquartered giant Besix.
Bombay Stock Market-listed L&T revealed in a missive that the plant has been the company’s biggest construction project in the UAE and has a capacity of 375,000 m3 water per day.
Phase 2 of the plant will provide enough water for current and future demand based on the development of Expo 2020 Dubai.
Jebel Ali's treatment facilities now have a combined treatment capacity of 675 million litres of water per day, of which 300 million litres – or 45% – comes from Phase 1.
L&T's senior vice president and head of water, smart world, and communication, S Rajavel, said 10 million safe man-hours had been clocked by the project team behind Phase 2.
Commenting on the project, S N Subrahmanyan, chief executive officer and managing director of L&T, said: “This is perhaps the first project of this magnitude and complexity that has been completed and delivered ahead of time with not a single minute lost due to incidents of any kind.”
On 18 April, DM revealed that Phase 2's construction programme used 143,000 m3 of solid reinforced concrete; 21,772 tonnes of reinforced steel; 2,659 pieces of mechanical and engineering equipment and machinery; 700 km of cables; and 30km of pipes.
Phase 2 work is complete, UAE state news agency Wam reported at the time.
According to L&T, Phase 2 was developed based on a build, test, commission, operate, and maintain contract model. The contract's scope covered primary, secondary, and tertiary treatment process units, as well as the installation of odour control facilities.
Additionally, the Indian contractor said, its work with Besix also covered connections with Phase 1 of the STP; and upgrade works for Phase 1, its effluent pump stations, reservoirs, and biological reactors.
