The UAE’s Ministry of Infrastructure Development has partnered with French tyre maker Michelin to work on a two-month pilot project that will see a road construction progress kicking off, with a national green road network to be built using a mix of recycled rubber and asphalt.

According to a report by state news agency, Wam, the project will be the first in the UAE to use recycled rubber and asphalt for the construction of a road that is expected to be a low-maintenance project that cuts noise pollution.

Assistant under-secretary of the ministry's infrastructure planning sector, Eng Aisha Al Midfa, said the project is a part of the ministry’s efforts to build a green road network in the UAE and develop sustainable environment and infrastructure.

According to the ministry, the rubber asphalt comprises regular concrete mixed with crumb rubber and used tyres, which is suitable for road pavement work.

Regional director of Michelin in the Middle East, Naser Shashaa, said that the company has been implementing its 4R strategy – which aims to reduce, reuse, recycle, and renew materials – for the UAE ministry's innovative project.

Major UAE entities are leading the drive towards green building materials. A senior official from Expo 2020 Dubai told Construction Week in September 2018 that the organisation was using asphalt mix made from recycled tyres to pave 30,000 car parking spaces that Al Naboodah Construction Group was building.
