Dubai real estate developer Emaar Properties has launched a $6.8bn (AED25bn) leisure and residential scheme, as well as 'The Dubai Mall by the Sea', at Mina Rashid – the home of Queen Elizabeth 2 (QE2) that is also known as Port Rashid – near Bur Dubai, Deira, and Dubai Creek in a bid to catalyse cruise tourism in the UAE emirate.

The Mina Rashid development by Emaar will feature 430 berths, which the developer said can cater to the world’s largest yachts.

Other features include ‘The Dubai Mall by the Sea’, a waterfront retail, dining, and leisure hub; a floating yacht club; a 1.26ha sandy beach; and Dubai’s longest swimming pool.

Hotels, a private beach club, interconnected parks, a 500m-long palm tree-fringed canal, art galleries, a theatre, and a museum will also be developed within the project.

Chairman Mohamed Alabbar-led Emaar said P&O Marinas, a subsidiary of global trade firm DP World – UAE Region, has made the land available to Emaar, which will continue to develop marinas and berthing facilities.

The developer has also announced the launch of Sirdhana, a project comprising one-, two-, and three-bedroom waterfront apartments and townhouses named after the British Royal Mail Ship, the first commercial vehicle to dock at Mina Rashid.

Mina Rashid, Dubai’s first port when it opened in 1972, is already home to world famous ocean liner QE2. A 13-deck hotel, dining, entertainment and events destination, it is docked permanently, offering visitors an interactive exhibition of its heritage from the 1960s.

Emaar said Sirdhana will be in walking distance to QE2, a community park and The Dubai Mall by the Sea.

Facilities at Emaar's Mina Rashid, it added, will also complement the Hamdan bin Mohammed Cruise Terminal. Built and operated by P&O Marinas, it has received 2.3 million visitors since its inauguration in 2014, with visitor numbers rising by 172% between 2014 and 2018.

The terminal reached a major milestone last year when it successfully berthed five international cruise liners carrying a total of 25,000 passengers in a single day.
