New Etihad Rail contracts have been awarded.

Etihad Rail has approved construction contracts worth $1.2bn (AED4.4b) for civil and track works on Packages B and C within Stage 2 of the 1,200km federal railway network connecting Abu Dhabi and Dubai and Khalifa Port, Khalifa Industrial City, and Jebel Ali Port, following a board meeting chaired by Etihad Rail’s chairman, HH Sheikh Theyab bin Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

The project includes links to strategic ports and industrial areas nationwide, along a distance of 310 km.

Part of a 605km line from Ghuweifat to the Port of Fujairah on the east coast, Etihad Rail's newly awarded Packages B and C respectively span 216km and 94km.

China Railway Construction Corporation (CRCC) and Ghantoot Transport and General Contracting Company (GTGC) have respectively won the contracts.

The agreements were formalised during a signing ceremony attended by Etihad Rail’s chief executive officer, Shadi Malak, CRCC representative, Wang Jinsong, and chairman of GTGC, Ali Mohamed Sadiq Albloushi.

Package A of the project was awarded to a consortium of the CEO Yu Tao-led China State Construction Engineering Corporation Middle East (CSCEC ME) and South Korea’s SK Engineering and Construction (SKEC) in March 2019.

Commenting on the project, HH Sheikh Theyab said: "Etihad Rail will sustain the growth of our transport industry and freight carriage sector throughout the UAE, as railway systems are one of the most important means of transport on which countries depend to achieve their economic and social objectives.”
