Barakah NEP Units 1, 2's operating license requests in final review stage
FANR is currently at the final stage of reviewing the operating license applications for the nuclear energy plant's units
The board of management of UAE’s Federal Authority for Nuclear Regulation (FANR), in its Q1 2019 performance and national nuclear regulation activity review, tracked progress on the operating license applications submitted for Units 1 and 2 of the Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant (Barakah NEP) in Abu Dhabi's Al Dhafra region.
FANR is currently at the final stage of the application review for the licenses, and the authority said that reviewing the applications of Barakah NEP was a key priority for its management board to ensure that the project meets all regulatory requirements.
During the meeting, the authority also presented its 2018 Radiation Protection Committee report, which outlines activities and efforts – such as health surveillance, protection strategies for emergencies, and medical response enhancement – taken to improve radiation protection across the UAE.
The committee has four working groups carrying out radiation protection work.
UAE state news agency, Wam, reported that board members also reviewed plans for national and international cooperation with organisations and nuclear regulators of other countries to exchange transfer and knowledge related to research and development, as well as programmes to build up the technical capacity of Emiratis in the sector.
