Emirates Water and Electricity Company (Ewec), the authority responsible for planning, purchasing, and providing utilities across the UAE, has started commercial operations at the world’s largest single solar power project, the Noor Abu Dhabi plant that was built at a cost of $871.2m (AED3.2bn) by a joint venture of Abu Dhabi Power Corporation and a consortium of Japan's Marubeni Corp and China's Jinko Solar Holding.

With a capacity of 1,177 MW – enough to fulfil the energy needs of 90,000 people – the solar plant, located in Sweihan, features more than 3.2 million panels installed across its 8km2 site.

During its peak construction period, 2,900 people were deployed to build the project.

The solar plant achieved a world record when it received a tarriff offer of 8.888 fils/kWh at its bidding stage.

Commenting on the plant’s completion, chairman of Ewec, Mohammad Hassan Al Suwaidi, said: “The completion of the project marks a significant milestone in the UAE’s Energy Strategy 2050, launched in 2017, to increase the contribution of clean energy in the total energy mix to 50% by 2050 while reducing the carbon footprint of power generation by 70%."

Chief operating officer at the power business division of Marubeni Corp, Yoshiaki Yokota, said that the company had delivered the project “within budget and on schedule”.
