Empower awards $27m Dubai Production City network contracts
Dubai district cooling energy supplier says project consists of two network extensions to link seven semi-permanent plants
Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower) has awarded contracts worth more than $27.2m (AED100m) to extend its 10km network and connect various plants in Dubai Production City, a free zone serving media production companies in the UAE emirate.
In a statement, the district cooling energy supplier said the project consists of two network extensions to link seven semi-permanent plants.
Part of the group’s strategy to “develop its infrastructure using advanced technologies to achieve customer happiness and satisfaction”, the project will be completed by Q1 2020.
Speaking on the awards, Ahmed Bin Shafar, chief executive officer of Empower, said: “Adopting district cooling solutions at Dubai Production City will achieve high levels of energy efficiency, and contribute to the region's efforts to reduce carbon emissions from energy consumption.”
Empower currently operates more than 1.43 million refrigeration tons (RT) of district cooling, serving more than 1,090 buildings in Dubai International Financial Centre, Palm Jumeirah, Jumeirah Lake Towers, Ibn Battuta Mall, Discovery Gardens, and Dubai Healthcare City.
February 2019 saw Empower enter a $408m (AED1.5bn) loan deal with five banks – Citibank, Emirates NBD, UAE Standard Chartered, Mashreq, and Samba Financial Group Dubai – to support its upcoming construction projects in Dubai.
The amount secured was three times higher than the company's initial expectations, which Empower said demonstrated strong appetite for district cooling schemes.
