Sharjah Directorate of Public Works (SDPW) has started construction on the 15,700m2 Khorfakkan Abattoir in Sharjah's Al Subahiya as part of its development plans for the area.

According to UAE state news agency, Wam, project works are expected to be completed by the end of 2020, and the abattoir will cost $4.9m (AED 18m) to construct.

The abattoir will be able to hold up to 600 animals and will feature sustainable practices to reduce the thermal emission of the slaughterhouse.

The facility will also feature a centralised cleaning system.

Head of SDPW's design team, Eng Alaa Salem Al Jarwan, said the construction order had been issued to the contractor.
