Federal Electricity and Water Authority’s (Fewa) chairman and UAE Minister of Energy and Industry, Suhail bin Mohammed Faraj Faris Al Mazrouei, announced that the utility company would join Emirates Water and Electricity Company (Ewec) to launch a gas-fired power plant in Umm Al Quwain.

Al Mazrouei said the plant would help achieve energy security, reduce the excessive consumption of energy, and preserve the environment, and make Fewa the highest-ranking authority in the Gulf region in terms of electricity production efficiency.

According to the UAE’s state news agency, Wam, Al Mazrouei said: “The authority aims to completely utilise reverse osmosis in the desalination process, which is part of the UAE’s water security strategy, through the establishment of a desalination plant in Umm Al Quwain with a production capacity of 150 million gallons.

“This will reduce the carbon footprint and is in line with the UAE Energy Strategy 2050.”
