Saudi Arabia’s National Water Company (NWC) has started operations of its sewage treatment plant (STP) project in the Rabigh governorate of KSA’s Makkah region, at a cost of approximately $29.3m (SAR110m), in order to receive sewage tanker trucks from all parts of the governorate and its centres.

The STP project was part of the company’s objectives to prevent pollution and to lift off environmental harm from residents of the governorate.

According to its design specifications, the STP project has adopted the triple treatment process, with a production capacity of 15,000m3 per day, and will serve more than 75,000 beneficiaries.

Commenting on the launch of the STP project in the Rabigh governorate, the head of the Western Sector of the National Water Company, Eng Mohammed bin Saleh Al-Ghamdi, said that the operation of the project comes in conjunction with the closure of the previous random dump of wastewater in Rabigh.

Al-Ghamdi emphasised that the STP project in Rabigh operates in a modern and environmentally-safe way.

In order to maximise the benefit of the project, the National Water Company has signed an agreement with the Municipality of the Rabigh Governorate to utilise some of the treated water resulting from the plant in the works of planting trees and increasing the green area in the governorate.

In addition, work is currently being carried out in coordination with the municipality to shut down the previous dump and to establish an STP in Al-Juhfa area.
