Construction work has restarted on the first of the Onyx Towers being built in Dubai after being placed on hold for over six months.
According to online project tracker BNC Network, work on the $200m scheme containing three separate towers fronting Sheikh Zayed Road has recommenced after being placed on hold in February this year.
The project, which has been developed by a joint venture between Saudi Arabian investment firm Ishraqah for development and the real estate arm of industrial investment company Zahran Group, consists of three towers ranging in size from 28 to 14 floors next to Emaar Business Park.
Two larger towers will contain office buildings and a third, smaller tower will contain a 200-room, 4-star hotel. The three buildings will be conected by a podium level, and in total the development will have space for almost 2,000 cars.
The scheme was designed by architects KEO International and work initially began in July 2009 with Arabtec as main contractor. However, the developer terminated its deal with the company in November 2009, citing a “failure to meet certain contractual conditions”.
Al Shafar General Contracting was then appointed in January 2010, and began work on the site in October. Within 12 months, it had completed the site’s foundations and work on its basement levels, but work stopped again in February 2012.
Work has now recommenced on Tower 1, which will contain a ground and 21 extra floors. Work is being overseen by engineering consultants Adnan Saffarini and is expected to complete by June 2013.
