The main terminal building and runway at Muscat’s new $1.8bn International Airport are likely to be completed in 2013, according to the chief executive of the Sultanate’s Public Authority for Civil Aviation.
The Times of Oman said that Dr Salim Al Aufi told a conference that the airport will be completed by 2014 and will initially be able to handle 12m passengers a year.
“Further expansions planned in three subsequent phases will ultimately boost the airport’s annual capacity to 24, 36 and 48 million passengers when the demand is required. The exiting airport handles 7.5 million passengers annually,” he said.
Al Aufi said a new cargo facility has also been envisaged at the airport, which will have a capacity to handle 60,000 tonnes a year.
He added that the new $854m terminal at Salalah airport – currently being built by an L&T/Galfar Engineering joint venture – will initially accommodate 1m passengers when complete in 2014, but this could increase to 6m if required.
