A new power supply has been installed at the $800m Basra Sports City complex in Southern Iraq.
The site includes a 65,000-seat main stadium, plus a 10,000-seat secondary stadium, alongside four training pitches and eight athletics arenas.
The official opening of the site took place earlier this year, but a $1.5m contract to supply the site with generator sets from FG Wilson has recently been completed.
The generator sets were installed by Horizons Engineering, which is FG Wilson’s dealership in Jordan and Iraq.
Horizons managed the installation of seven FG Wilson generator sets – including one main FG Wilson 2500 kVA/11 kV generator set, two 800 kVA containerized units, two 750kVA containerized units and two 400kVA canopy units. These are currently providing prime power to the entire 558-acre complex, which also includes four, five-star hotels, restauarants, a sports residential complex, a man-made lake, service buildings and a fire station.
The generator sets will also be used as back-up power at a later stage of the construction process, when major international events will take place in Basra Sports City.
The contract to install the generator sets was awarded by Anwar Soura General Contracting.
Eng Maad Al Zubaidy of Anwar Soura said: “This was one of the most significant construction projects Iraq has seen in recent years and one which we hope will provide a lasting sporting and cultural legacy for the area.
“The project brief was met in full and we were extremely pleased with Horizons’ performance and the final installation for Basra Sports City. The power solution provided for the development has been a huge success.”
