Developers are planning to build Europe’s tallest skyscraper at a remote spa resort in the Swiss Alps.
The tower will stand 1,250 ft tall, towering over London’s The Shard (1,004ft), and even the under construction Federation Towers in Moscow (1,224 ft).
According to a report carried by Schweiz am Sonntag newspaper, the developers want to build the tower in Vals, a spa town that sits at an altitude of 4000 ft in the Swiss Alps. The luxury hotel is designed to attract wealthy Middle East and Asia tourists.
The tower – reportedly designed by American architect and 2005 Pritzker prize winner Thom Mayne who founded Morphosis Architects in the 1970s – will have around 100 suites and cost between $1000-25,000 per night to stay in.
Developers say they want the hotel to be one of the top five in the world.
The tower is expected to cost around $200m to build. It will have a small base, measuring just 100 x 50 feet, and have very deep foundations to support its height.
It’s believed that planning permission has not yet been granted for the building, and that the project has come under criticism in Switzerland – with some critics claiming that there is no need for it, and that it will never get off the ground.
