At least four more workers have died as a result of a building collapse during construction at the Al-Qassim University campus on Monday, bringing the death toll to at least 10.
An initial assessment of the scene suggests a section of roof collapsed under the weight of fresh concrete during a pour at around 15:00. According to local media reports, the roof section covered an area of around 570m2 and weighed an estimated 1250 tons.
Fifteen construction workers, including Pakistanis, Indians and Egyptians, were injured in the incident, said Col. Ibrahim Abal Khail, spokesman for the Civil Defense in Qassim.
Six of the injured were admitted to hospitals in Buraidah and Al-Bukairiyah, and it’s believed that two of them succumbed to their injuries. Police sniffer dogs and search probes from the fire department were used to scan the scene for trapped workers.
The bodies of six workers of Pakistani origin were pulled from the rubble, and rescuers were working to recover the bodies of two others.
Precise details of the incident and the numbers of those injured or killed are sketchy. One Asian diplomatic source said at least 10 workers from Pakistan and one from India died in the incident.
