Larsen & Toubro (L&T) announced on Tuesday, 25 August, 2015, that the power transmission and distribution business of L&T Construction bagged orders worth $23.6bn in July and August 2015, at least three of which were from the GCC.
In a filing to the Bombay Stock Exchange, L&T said the company was awarded two orders from Oman Electricity Transmission Company, and one from Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA).
L&T’s scope in Oman includes the engineering, procurement, and construction of a 132kV grid station at Saada, and 220kV/132kV/33kV grid station at Madinat Sultan Qaboos.
For DEWA, L&T will construct a 132kV/11kV substation in Dubai.
L&T added it has bagged another order from “a reputed customer in the Middle East for the supply of 33kV transmission towers”.
The company added its breakthrough order came from Tenaga Nasional Berhad (TNB), for the design, manufacture, supply, installation, testing and commissioning of a 500 kV double circuit transmission line in Malaysia.
Member of the board and senior executive vice president for infrastructure and construction at L&T, S N Subrahmanyam said: “This breakthrough we have achieved in developed and demanding market like Malaysia is an extremely significant development in our strategic thrust into new geographies.
“We foresee huge opportunities in the ASEAN region.
“The orders we have bagged in the Middle East are helping us secure our credentials [in the region],” Subrahmanyam added.
In June 2015, L&T won power transmission and distribution grid contracts in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and Oman worth $200m, Utilities-ME reported.
The company clinched a contract from National Grid Saudi Arabia (a subsidiary of Saudi Electricity Company) for engineering, procurement and construction works (EPC) of cabling work in Hail city.
Under the contract, L&T will build a 132 kV double circuit transmission line in Turaif, Qaseem and Hail areas of Saudi Arabia.
L&T’s Oman subsidiary received an order from Oman Electricity Transmission Company for EPC works on a new 132/33 kV Salalah Free Zone-2 grid station.
The grid deals were part of a package of contracts L&T won in the GCC worth $360m across various sectors in May and June 2015.
