This year’s winning entry for the Electrical Project of the Year was Khazna Data Centres by Black & White Engineering.
The Khazna Data Centres project consist of two (nearly identical) double storey buildings; one located in Abu Dhabi and the other in Meydan, Dubai.
The new 1000m² data halls and associated plant/systems were integrated in to existing live data centres which required numerous reviews, method statements and ongoing risk assessments.
Black & White Engineering’s design consisted of the following elements: single point of failure check of the total system, risk analysis plus cause and effect diagrams/matrix, detailed sequence of operations on power, protection device coordination studies, PUE (power utilisation efficiency) calculations, complete Amtech/Dialux calculations including all tie-ins to existing data hall systems, specifications, layouts, details, schematics, schedules, and coordinated BIM/Revit models.
Judges said the project was a clear winner and met almost all the elements they were looking for.
On receiving the award, technical director Alistair Davis said: “It is obviously a great honour to be recognised with this award. In the last few months things have been alittle quiet in the market but there a lot of opportunities out there. What it needs is for a business to be flexible and at Black and White we are open to everything. Finding the right projects is the best way to keep a team motivated and with Dubai Expo 2020 there is certainly a light at the ned of the tunnel. It’s not just about Dubai at all. It is an event which will be of great benefit for the UAE as a whole and will show that, in the long term, there is the prospect of many great projects which companies can be a part of.”
