Master developer Nakheel has broken ground on its $194.1m (AED713m) Dragon Towers residential project at its Dragon City mixed-use community.

Made up of two 37-storey buildings, the project is the first residential component at Dragon City and the only high-rise in the area, according to Dubai Media Office (DMO).

Due for completion in 2021, each of its towers has 571 one- and two-bedroom units. It is also connected by a covered bridge to China-inspired Dragon Mart and its 5,000 shops, restaurants, and attractions.

The ground-breaking ceremony was led by Ali Rashid Lootah, Nakheel chairman, and comes a month after the developer awarded an $150.3m (AED552m) contract to Ali Mousa & Sons Contracting to build Dragon Towers.

The UAE-based firm beat out 11 other construction proposals that Nakheel said it was also reviewing for the project, which neighbours International City.

At real estate trade show Cityscape Global in Dubai earlier in October, Nakheel unveiled two projects – a beachfront in the man-made Deira Islands waterfront city, and a new cluster of townhouses, each with a private pool, at Jumeirah Park.

The end of July this year saw Nakheel sign a nearly $80m (AED291m) construction contract with Thai hotel group Centara Hotels & Resorts to build a 601-room beachfront resort.
