Tourism Development and Investment Company (TDIC) has awarded Bauer International the enabling works contract for the first phase of the Deyar Al Mafraq hotel staff accommodation development.

The contractor will work on two plots, which are allocated for housing for around 2000 staff in hotels such as St Regis Hotel and Residences, Westin Hotel & Spa and Eastern Mangrove, Angsana Resort and Spa.

The enabling works, which include piling and setting the foundations of the buildings, are due to be completed within a period of 115 days.

“This announcement marks the setting of the first building block of Deyar Al Mafraq project, which has been created to service the demand for individual and family accommodation within the growing hospitality sector of Abu Dhabi,” said Lee Tabler, CEO of TDIC, the body responsible for development of Abu Dhabi’s Saadiyat Island.

“We are confident that working together with a reputable company like Bauer International FZE, we can continue to build the necessary foundations to support Abu Dhabi’s long term ambitions.”

TDIC is the master developer for Deyar Al Mafraq and is developing the first phase itself. Other plots will be sold to hotel owners to build and manage their own staff accommodation.

The development covers a total area of 712,000 square metres, with a potential total gross floor area of 1,670,000 square metres. Around 35,000 people are expected to live in Deyar Al Mafraq once it is complete.

The project, which will be opening in phases starting from 2011, is the first in Abu Dhabi designed to provide affordable accommodation for all employees working in the hospitality sector – from top management to junior level staff.
